You heard right. Outside the Greyhound bus station walk north a block to Fremont Street. Can't miss it because it's the Fremont Experience. Walk through there to Las Vegas Blvd which is a block or two after Fremont ends. Catch the Deuce double decker bus. It will take you all along the strip and stops at just about every hotel along the strip. The cost is $3.00 one way or $7.00 for a 24 hr pass. That would be cheapest way for you to get around. I wouldn't stay in the downtown hotels. Once there you can get all around the strip as long as you stay in the main area of the strip.
References :
http://www.myvegasbuddy.com

It really depends on how hot it is there. When I visited it was 120 degrees and in the evening it didn't get very cool.
References :
there's a number of modest resorts near the greyhound terminal.
and then when you get there to go to Bellagio fountains, for example, use the local bus service. they one day passes and one way fairs. you will not have to use a cab and there are tour buses if you want to go to hoover dam for some other sigh seeing.

use vegas.com to check out some of the sights and enjoy your visit.
References :
henderson guy

Most visitors to Vegas either walk or take the deuce (bus). Most sightseeing spots are within walking distance along the strip. There are lots of ways to get around Vegas and here a few of them

Providing you stay on or within a block or so of the strip - yes you can walk. Suggest the Excalibur, it's cheapest of the placed on strip. Excalibur is across the street from MGM and you can ride a free train to the Luxor and Mandalay Bay. Last time I was there we walked the entire time, except when we went way up town to a particular restaurant off strip.

There are buses that run all over town and there is a monorail that goes from the MGM to Circus Circus (I think), although I found the monorail kind of pricey ($10 for 2 - cab was a similar price).

Mostly we walked. Wear really comfortable shoes, cause you gunna be doing some serious walking.
